A Cuppa Joe
By Joe Westbury
BCA President
I was talking to someone the other day about why they were a member of a professional organization and they sort of gave me a blank stare. When faced with the question all they could reply was “Well, I’ve just always been a member. I guess it’s an OK group.”
I feel that BCA membership is more than just being a member of an “OK group.” Here are some thoughts that crossed my mind when I returned to the office.
Why should you ask someone to join BCA? Because of all those fabulous dessert breaks at the conventions, of course. No, actually I would have to say two great reasons stand out in my 30 years of uninterrupted membership: the networking opportunities and the workshops.
The networking provides not only an opportunity to learn from your peers, but it also leads to job opportunities. When I was a young member I wanted to know how I could prepare myself for career advancement. Now that I am in management, I attend with my radar fully tuned to the new talent that has joined in recent years. If I am not currently hiring, chances are I will be asked for a referral during the year. I take notes on who I meet at BCA and remember them for future employment openings. And I also review the award entries so I can get an idea of the quality of work being produced by certain individuals.
And that brings us back to the workshop. In just three short months…April 19-22 to be precise…we will gather in Richmond for this year’s meeting. Hosted by the International Mission Board, we plan to broaden our horizons on the professional as well as spiritual plane. The workshops will be the best ever…and the day trip to the nation’s capitol will be an education in itself.
Be sure that you have blocked these date on your calendar. See you in Richmond.
Ty Wood is the director of the media services department of the Florida Baptist Convention. He’s been serving Florida Baptists since 1983 and became a BCA member in 1988. Prior to joining the convention, Wood worked as a copywriter for radio station KPBC in Dallas and as senior media analyst for the Syscon Corporation in California. He’s a graduate of Pacific Western University in Los Angeles and has served our country in Vietnam and in the Army Reserve.
Wood is a multiple BCA awards winner and won the M.E. Dodd Award in 2004 for his patriotic video, “Raising The Standard.” The Dodd Award is the top award in the audio-visual communications division and recognizes significant achievement in radio, television and film.
Versace, Armani, Oscar De La Renta, Calvin Klein, Gucci, JC Penny. These are just a few of the top fashion designers you may want to employ when you accept the grand prize award at the Wilmer C. Fields awards competition this year. You’ll soon receive information detailing competition guidelines along with an awards entry form. The divisions and categories will also appear on the BCA website. So after you pick out your wardrobe, be sure to look back at your work from 2005 and gather your best material for early submission.

Do you have April 19-22 marked on your calendar? You should! ‘Cause you don’t want to miss the amazing BCA workshop we have planned for you at the Missionary Learning Center near Richmond.
We have top-notch speakers and workshop leaders signed up, some wonderful eating experiences planned and a fun/educational day in D.C. Plus, the awards banquet will be spread out over two meals this year. That’s right: TWO! We’ll have a great luncheon at the learning center Saturday and honor those who produced award-winning pieces last year. But the major award winners won’t be revealed until Saturday night when we travel to the IMB for a catered dinner that will astound your taste buds and a speaker who will both entertain and enrich.
Workshop leaders we haven’t mentioned before include Steven Roundtree, art director for U.S. News & World Report; Mark Sandlin, senior photographer for Southern Living; Dan Beatty, visual coordinator for the Richmond Times-Dispatch; and Paige Peak, chief communications officer for the Virginia Baptist Mission Board.
And something new this year: because we’re meeting at the MLC, we decided to go with an all-inclusive fee that covers not only your workshop, but lodging and all meals except lunch and dinner Friday when we’re in D.C. Imagine! For only $399 you get a packed workshop that includes a trip to D.C. and time at the Newseum, National Geographic and Washington Post, lodging for 4 nights, all meals (except the two in D.C.) and extra goodies! Compare that to $100 or more a night just for lodging, plus a workshop registration of $235. That’s a savings of more than $200!
Let’s go over that again. Your cost for this year’s BCA workshop will be:
- Your transportation to Richmond
- Shuttle to MLC (if you’re flying) of $34.25, one-way (cheaper if you travel with other BCAers)
- An all-inclusive event fee of $399
- The expense of two meals in D.C.
That’s it! That’s all there is! So, if you don’t already have April 19-22 blocked off on your calendar, do it! And we’ll see you at the Missionary Learning Center!

Mission Experience
The mission trip to Beirut has been canceled due to low interest. BCA is currently looking at a number of options to fill this need. If you have an idea for an appropriate missions experience to be incorporated into our time in Richmond, please contact Erich Bridges, BCA missions vice president, at 804-219-1225. E-mail: ebridges@imb.org.
Plans are underway for BCA members to gather in Spring 2007 for a Gulf Coast Getaway in Mobile, Alabama. Everyone is aware of how Hurricane Katrina impacted the Gulf Coast last year, as well as the slow rebuilding process that is taking place. Although Mobile was impacted by the storms, it has bounced back quickly. The word from our representative at the Mobile Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau is that "Mobile Bay is wide open for business. We will meet and exceed your expectations!"
We're looking forward to a great time of enrichment, renewal, relationship building and fellowship next spring, as we take advantage of Mobile's beautiful location, professional climate and recreational opportunities. In addition to our structured time together, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy great golf and fishing, delicious seafood, interesting museums, historical sites featuring a World War II battleship and submarine, and more. More importantly, Mobile will provide a relaxed setting for you to reconnect with your communications colleagues and your Lord. You'll get a full preview of this Gulf Coast Getaway at this year's workshop April 19-22.
