A Cuppa Joe
By Joe Westbury
BCA President
Time to make a list, and check it twice. We are nearing the end of one year and gearing up for another. Time to take stock of where we are and where we want to be. You’ll soon see a plethora of stories reminding you to be sure you don’t overlook end-of-the-year tax planning to be sure you stay on track and are not surprised come April 15.
Let me be the first one to remind you of your BCA end-of-the-year planning. You don’t want to be surprised once April 19 rolls around, so pull out your checklist to be sure you don’t forget any of the important items listed below:
- Have you put the workshop expenses in the budget you submitted upline for supervisor approval?
- Did you remember to include other staff members as well?
- Have you enrolled new staff members in BCA so they can be dues-paying members when they submit their award entries in early spring?
- Have your blocked the workshop dates on your personal and office calendars to be sure there are no conflicts?
- Have you made a decision on whether to participate on the mission trip to Beirut? Erich Bridges has written an article that gives a wonderful overview of the need for reaching Lebanon with the gospel as it stands at an important crossroad in its history. www.bpnews.net/bpcolumn.asp?ID=2046
Leave nothing to chance as you look five months down the road. This year’s Richmond meeting will give you growth opportunities you will not receive anywhere else.
See you in Richmond … and at the White House, National Geographic, Washington Post, and on the Washington Mall.
Meet BCA's Membership Vice-President: Woody Murray
Woody Murray is the corporate brand manager for LifeWay Christian Resources. He has been with LifeWay for fourteen years, primarily in marketing and became a member of BCA in 1999. Prior to joining LifeWay, Woody was vice president of media at Primm & Company, a full-service advertising agency in Norfolk, VA. He is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.
In his spare time, Woody refinishes antiques and does some woodworking. He is also an avid volleyball player. Woody and his wife will celebrate their 30th anniversary next June. He has two children. His son just completed a masters program in Limmerick, Ireland, and his daughter is a high school senior. He is an active member of Bellevue Baptist Church in Nashville.
Membership: BCA means Rewarding Relationships
To a number of LifeWay’s BCA members, it’s all about networking – strengthening existing relationships and building new ones.
“At the annual meeting, I do have a great opportunity to network. I spend the couple of days of BCA meeting new folks in communications roles around the denomination and get to network with those I've known for a while.”
Chris Turner, Media Relations Manager
“I'm a member of several journalism/public relations related professional organizations, but I find BCA to be the most valuable and fulfilling. In the other groups, I don't have the same opportunity to relate to peers as professionals who share such similar rewards and challenges. With all of us working for or with Baptist entities, we can more easily understand each other. The networking is so important in my work.”
Polly House, Corporate Communications Specialist
“I attended my first BCA last year in Colorado with my wife. I enjoyed the keynote speakers and training sessions, many which related to my work as a photographer. I also had the pleasure of getting to know many of the writers, editors, and photographers from our state papers and conventions. My wife and I enjoyed the day trips together, the tours, and the nightly, family-oriented entertainment. It was a great time. Just the right balance of training, fellowship, and play.”
Kent Harville, Corporate Visuals Coordinator
As we approach the new year, make BCA one of your keys to networking, and tell others how BCA can benefit them. In particular, share with new employees where you work how BCA can help them develop life-long relationships as they begin to serve in Baptist communications.
2006 BCA Workshop: April 19-22
Warm Fall days and cool nights are slipping toward Thanksgiving and then Christmas, but Richmond folks are focused on another holiday: EASTER! And the week after Easter when BCA-ers come to the Missionary Learning Center for 3 1/2 days of learning, networking and fun! http://www.imb.org/core/mlc.asp
Your program committee is busy making arrangements for a great workshop. Here's just a taste of the caliber of workshop leaders and speakers already confirmed:
Steven King, photo editor and multimedia journalist with WashingtonPost.com/Newsweek Interactive, who will lead workshops on Video and Photography on the Web.
Mindy Belz, editor of World Magazine, who will lead a professional development session on Trends in Print Publications.
Pat Davidson, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer and professor of journalism at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who will bring devotions one day and lead workshop sessions on Telling Stories with a Camera.
Mike Barnett, professor of missionary church planting at Columbia (S.C.) International University, who will bring devotions one day and lead a professional development session on Managing Change.
Sara Beth Geoghegan, singer-songwriter from Nashville, Tenn., who will be our worship leader. Check out her sound at sarabeth.net.
And don’t forget: There will be a day in Washington, D.C., to explore, eat ethnic food and meet some professionals who will challenge your thinking!
If you’ve not already reserved April 19-22 on your calendar, do it today. For more information, contact Mary Jane Welch at (804) 219-1526 or Anita Bowden at (804) 219-1224.
Mission Trip: Dive Into Beirut!
By Erich Bridges
BCA missions vice president
I just returned from a brief visit to Beirut, and it’s almost a new city. What a difference a decade-plus of peace makes!
Charming cafes and restaurants have replaced bombed-out buildings. Fashionable couples, young families and tourists stroll through streets where ethnic militias used to shoot at each other during the 1975-91 civil war. Beirut is the “Paris of the Middle East” once again, and a new generation is eagerly reaching for freedom and prosperity in a historic moment of change.
But what Lebanese need most is the message of Jesus Christ – and they won’t get it from political freedom alone. That’s where the 2006 BCA mission trip comes in!
While in Beirut, I walked with a “Beirut and Beyond” mission team member through some of the streets I hope you’ll be walking with me next spring. We prayed for the families who live in the many high-rise apartment buildings there, for the thousands of university students crowding the area – and for YOU, if God is leading you to join us. I’ve heard from several of you expressing strong interest, and I’m waiting to hear from more!
Lebanon is the only Arab country with real freedom of religion. Yet, of more than 1.5 million people in Beirut, fewer than 15,000 are born-again followers of Jesus. The “Beirut and Beyond” team welcomes volunteers and uses them effectively. The goal is to reach every neighborhood of the city – especially in Muslim West Beirut, where we’ll be working -- with the good news of Christ through prayerwalking, door-to-door Bible distribution and making friends. We’ll also squeeze in some sightseeing and shopping in and around Beirut.
We plan to depart for Lebanon following the last 2006 BCA conference session in Richmond, Va., (probably Sunday afternoon, April 23, from Washington/Dulles Airport) and arrive in Beirut by Monday afternoon. We will return to Washington the following weekend. Cost estimate per person, including airfare, hotel and food, is around $1,600 (depending on number of days in Beirut). If you’re interested, please contact me at 804-219-1225. E-mail: ebridges@imb.org. We need to determine by Dec. 1 if we’ll be going and how many we’ll be taking.
