Jammin with Jan
Every self-respectin’ cowboy in the Old West knew that a good chuck wagon cook was hard to find and harder to keep. Cookie, as he was known, worked hard to rustle up hearty meals, or “chuck,” for hungry cowpunchers.
BCA’s very own Cookie, a.k.a. Allen Spencer with the Colorado Baptist General Convention and his able assistant, Kathy Rosales, rustled up a great workshop this year. Workshop participants filled up on tasty “grub” – outstanding keynote speakers, knowledgeable breakout session leaders, and a field trip to Focus on the Family. And very few passed up dessert – improv comedy at the Rattlebrain Theatre, good, clean Old West entertainment at the Flying W Chuckwagon, and a sightseeing trip to Estes Park.
I left the workshop full and satisfied, knowing that I had a pack full of great ideas and tips to help me in my ministry.
So I just gotta say thanks again to Allen and Kathy and their planning team for a job well done. And I’m whettin’ my appetite for next year’s workshop in Richmond. See you next year!
Jan Kelley
BCA president, 2004-2005
ON A PERSONAL NOTE -- We regret that Allen's position at the Colorado convention was eliminated soon after the workshop as part of a cost-saving measure due to financial constraints. (Kathy's job is still intact). Let's commit to praying for God's provision for Allen in his job search and for the Colorado state convention in these tough financial times.

Sally Morgenthaler
On Thursday, the day opened with a breakfast and keynote address by Sally Morgenthaler, founder of sacramentis.com and author of Worship Evangelism: Inviting Unbelievers Into the Presence of God (Zondervan, 1995).
Morgenthaler began her address by asking the crowd to answer the question, “What is the dumbest thing your church has ever done?”
The bottom line of her address was that the church in America is in crisis because it is by and large living in the past in terms of worship. With only 18.7 % of Americans churched, Morgenthaler asked, “What do we need to do to help us see the crisis?”
American cultural history can be defined into four classifications of communication – oral, print, broadcast and internet, she said. The church is stuck in the print and broadcast divisions while the world has moved to internet or interactive, she noted.
In the broadcast mode, the church has a “sit and receive” posture. Worship includes praise teams and other linear activities. In the internet mode, worship is hands on and involves “getting up and doing something”. Music and visuals are also combined.
“The world is not going to wait for us to get it,” the worship leader said.
During a breakout session, Morgenthaler continued her comments on worship with a focus on the use of a projector.
“If you want to change worship, don’t start with music,” she said. “Introduce video projection with traditional hymns.
“But, before you project something,” she continued, “ask ‘what will the participants be doing before, during and after?’”
To achieve excellence in projection, she suggested forming a visual committee, using local artist and photographers and student videographers.
Tom Fortson
Promise Keepers president and CEO Tom Fortson spoke following lunch on Thursday. Fortson described Promise Keepers as a marketplace movement. He said that Promise Keepers are everywhere!
The reason the organization has impacted the marketplace, Fortson said, is because the group has “focused on the marketplace”.
“Promise Keepers is about men,” he said. “We are seeking to ignite and unite men to passionately follow Christ.”
Fortson said that Promise Keepers have focused on seven principles: worship, vital relationships between men, integrity/purity, commitment to family and home, local church involvement, biblical unity and the Great Commission.
Focus on the Family
A tour of the organization’s facility, overviews of various departments by vice presidents and a Q & A with James Dobson highlighted BCAers four-hour visit to Focus on the Family April 22 in Colorado Springs. A few facts:
- Over 1,300 employees work at the national headquarters that is located on a ridge facing Pike’s Peak in Colorado Springs.
- The ministry is debt free.
- Dobson has never taken a salary for his work for the organization.
- 175 employees operate the organization’s mail and phone center, processing some 2,500 pieces of correspondence and calls each day. Some of the employees telecommute. The organization goes to extraordinary lengths to respond to its constituents, including a department of counselors who focuses on individuals’ needs.
- The ministry’s Welcome Center features a book store, interactive museum and children’s area, including a three-story slide, puppet stage, soda shop and more. It is one of the top tourist attractions in Colorado.
The Q & A with Dobson was in conjunction with participants in a women’s retreat sponsored by Focus on the Family. BCAers were only in the room for a portion of the session due to other appointments at the ministry.
The session opened with the viewing of Dobson’s April 21 appearance on Fox News’s Hannity and Colmes in which he talked about his the judicial campaign. No questions were asked on the topic during the time BCA participants were in the room.
Most of the questions dealt with family issues such as co-parenting, resources for couples with no children and raising daughters. One question focused on the Sponge Bob, Square Pants controversy from several months ago.
As the BCA group left, Dobson thanked them for the support “your leaders give to me.”
