Dishin’ with Doug
2003-2004 BCA President

Much has been said this year about St. Louis as the site of BCA’s first organizational meeting in 1954. But Fort Worth, Texas, played a significant role in our history as well, for it was there the first annual workshop was held on February 17-18, 1955. In his wonderful book about BPRA/BCA’s history, James Cox wrote: “A program format was established then which has essentially been followed at almost all subsequent annual meetings. It consists of serious program content, including plenary and shirtsleeve sessions in small groups, coupled with a generous mixture of free and fellowship time.”

That proven formula will once again be used this April 15-17, as we gather for our fiftieth annual workshop. Your officers and committees have been working hard for many months to plan an exciting and worthwhile time of celebration, education and fellowship. It will be a time of looking back and looking forward, of honoring our past and dreaming about the future.

I want to especially highlight two events. At our awards dinner on Thursday evening, we’ll have the rare opportunity to hear from Wilmer C. Fields, longtime public relations secretary for the SBC Executive Committee, for whom our awards are named.  Then on Saturday, we’ll be able to put our communications skills to work as we minister to children and youth at the East St. Louis Activity Center. You’ll want to read the rest of this newsletter to find out all the details about the workshop, but suffice it to say, it will be an experience you won’t want to miss!

My advice to you – get your taxes done early. You don’t need that responsibility hanging over you as you get ready to attend the workshop. This year, don’t think of April 15 as Income Tax Day, but as BCA Day! Don’t delay – registration is now open.

One other note – you’ll see later in this newsletter the obituary for Leonard Holloway, a BPRA charter member and former president. When asked in 1987 to reflect on his year of leadership (1955-56), he wrote, “These were the years Southern Baptists were getting comfortable using the term “public relations” to identify a SBC ministry and a vocational career…It was a year of being patient but constantly talking about public relations as a viable Christian ministry.” His passing is another reminder of how the path we are walking along today was cleared by many who came before us. I’m grateful for committed communicators like Leonard Holloway and others who built a strong foundation upon which we can serve the Lord today.

Come Discover the Spirit of St. Louis, April 15-17

Having met for the first time in St. Louis, Missouri, half a century ago, BCA members are meeting in St. Louis again, with workshop presenters in a variety of communication tracks such as print, photography, electronic media, and graphic design. Keynote speakers will focus on crisis communications.

The workshop is a perfect opportunity to learn from fellow members and share ideas. Plus, it's a great place to adopt mentors, make contacts, and meet new friends. A special “family reunion” programming track is scheduled for longtime members and former members who want to just gather and fellowship during the professional development seminar times. A printable workshop registration form is on the BCA website at:

http://www.baptistcommunicators.org/workshop/workshop.htm

The Westin-St. Louis is serving as the workshop hotel. This elegant property is located blocks away from the Gateway Arch and across the street from Busch Stadium. Special workshop rates have been negotiated at $119 for single/double occupancy. Be sure to make your hotel reservations now by calling 1-800-Westin-1 or the hotel direct at (314) 621-2000. Mention BCA for the workshop rate. The hotel will release the BCA bloc of rooms back to the public after March 24.

Other highlights of the conference include a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game on Friday evening and the opportunity to share our communication skills at the East St. Louis Activity Center on Saturday. Come discover the spirit of communication, the spirit of BCA past and the spirit of St. Louis!

Officers Meeting Overview

BCA Officers met February 23 at LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville. President Doug Rogers reported Teresa Dickens, communications minister at First Baptist Church in Madison, Miss., will assume communications vice president responsibilities after the recent resignation of Sara Horn. Rogers also outlined suggestions for amending the current bylaws to reflect electronic forms of communications.

Program vice president Paul Huse reviewed the schedule for the BCA workshop with officers. Huse confirmed that a Cardinals baseball game and a visit to the East St. Louis Activity Center are integral parts of the workshop program. Awards Chairman Cathy Humphrey discussed the preliminary awards banquet program and shared a list of those judging the awards on March 13. Historian Chip Turner updated officers on the 50th anniversary CD-ROM which will be distributed in St. Louis. Jan Kelley, BCA president-elect, discussed the costing requirements of a special workshop giveaway item.

Winners of the student and professional scholarship programs were presented by scholarship committee chair Polly House. Brian Koonce, a journalism student at  Oklahoma Baptist University, won the Al Shackleford/Dan Martin undergraduate scholarship. Chris Turner,  a BCA member and employee of LifeWay Christian Resources, won the Shackleford/Martin graduate scholarship. Turner will begin class work on his masters in corporate communications at Austin-Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., in the fall. Hae Yun Park, a Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary student,  is the winner of the Alan Compton/ Bob Stanley international-minority scholarship. Sean Copley,  graphic designer for the Baptist Convention of  Maryland/Delaware, will attend the BCA workshop as the winner of the professional scholarship.

Membership vice president Randy Cowling distributed a brochure his committee is designing to help recruit new members. Officers discussed further ways to reach students and local communications ministers.

In other news, officers approved a year-to-date financial statement and voted to increase BCA administrative coordinator Keith Beene’s salary by $5 to $20/hr. Officers learned an audit has been completed and will be presented by the audit committee at the business meeting during the workshop. Program vice president-elect Allen Spencer shared three hotel proposals for the 2005 workshop in Denver.

Items tabled for further discussion included the site for the 2006 workshop, the feasibility of a corporate membership, creating a mentoring committee and the expansion of current professional development group offerings. The next officers’ meeting will be held Thursday, April 15 during the BCA workshop. If you have an item of business that you would like the officers to discuss, contact BCA President Doug Rogers at drogers@alsbom.org.

Maybe you’ve written a how-to article you could share? How about a why-it-works white paper? Have you ever written a critique on photography or know a html shortcut? If you have an article that would help your fellow communicators, submit it for consideration. Our BCA community is not only a benefit of membership, but it is a responsibility for participation. If you have a professional developmental need or know a great resource, let Mark Snowden, professional development officer, know about it. Contact Mark at msnowden@imb.org.
