PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
San Diego and BCA: A Winning Combination!
If you missed the recent Baptist Communicators Association annual meeting in
San Diego, you missed one of the best workshops yet. (And I’m not just saying
that because I’m president this year!)
I would like to thank Terry Barone and the entire communications staff
of the California Southern Baptist Convention for hosting us and providing
world-class hospitality. Thanks also go to Mark Wyatt of California
Baptist University, who served as co-program vice president.
It was refreshing to start the workshop with the awards competition Thursday
night instead of waiting until the last day of the conference. That way we were
able to congratulate the winners for the next two days!
Conferences and key notes were relevant and well attended. I especially enjoyed
David Riley, president of David Riley Associates, Newport Beach.
Riley’s keynote, “Institutional Identity and Branding,” was
thought-provoking and exhaustive (in the way the subject matter was covered).
With big-name clients numbering in the hundreds ? including Disney, Universal
Studios, Samaritan’s Purse and Billy Graham. Riley is truly one of the
top identity and branding practitioners in the field.
Rick Warren’s timely presentation on “How to Last in the Ministry”
Thursday was an excellent prelude to our Saturday field trip to Saddleback
Church. Warren encouraged BCA members not to allow daily deadlines to rob their
job of life. “Jesus enjoyed life,” said Warren. “Every seventh day God
told us to rest. Most our time pressures are
self- inflicted. Figure out what’s really important in your life and don’t
worry about the rest.”
On Saturday we were treated to performances by the Saddleback praise band.
After attending the Saturday worship service, BCA members enjoyed a meal with
the staff and Warren autographed copies of the best-selling book, The
Purpose Driven Life.
Without a doubt, the most-important event during the week was the mission trip
to Tijuana, Mexico. Seven BCA members and their families arrived early to
provide food, clothing and a message of hope in Christ to residents of
Riverside Dump in Tijuana. The mission trip was coordinated by Mark Snowden,
BCA missions vice president. You can read more about the trip here at http://www.bpnews.net/bpnews.asp?ID=15848.

It certainly was a hot time (actually it wasn’t hot at all) in San Diego. The
annual BCA worship is always the highlight of my professional development and
networking calendar. If you missed this year’s event, please make plans now
to attend the 2004 workshop to be held in St. Louis where we’ll be
celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Baptist
Communicators Association.
