PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
How
are you Balancing your Priorities?
Recently,
while attending the annual meeting of my local homeowner’s association, I
listened as several people shared about how busy they are and how many hours
they worked each day.
As
they shared, I couldn’t help but think about where their families were in all
their activity. Then it hit me—as if God was whispering in my ear—that
perhaps they were using their work as a substitution for God.
As
a Baptist communications professional, I work with Christians who feel called
to their vocation, but even Christians can be guilty of allowing their work to
become their God. For us, it can be extremely difficult to say “no,” even
when saying “yes” cuts into prioritizing our commitment to God and family.
But
God is clear on this subject. The first commandment says, “You shall have no
other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3).
Balancing
work and family has perhaps never been so difficult. Ironically, it also has
never been so important, considering the day we live in. The family is under
siege and needs every ounce of our prayer, our energies and support to stand
against the wiles of the devil.
So
the next time you feel overwhelmed and are tempted to slight your commitment to
family for your work, seek the One who created family and ask how He would have
you to balance your responsibilities.

OFFICERS MEET IN NASHVILLE
The
BCA officers met in Nashville at LifeWay Christian Resources on Friday,
February 21. Officers heard three recommendations which will be presented to
members at the workshop in San Diego. The Regional Strategy
Task Force will recommend regional chapters to be started in the west
and east regions.
Membership
vice president Robert Reeves will recommend a more simplified process
for approving new members involving administrative approval of applicants
rather than the need for a current member’s recommendation.
Officers
also will suggest the newsletter editor’s title be changed to communications
vice president since this individual writes and edits copy in addition to the
newsletter.
Sara
Horn, scholarship committee chair, presented the following scholarship
winners: Allison Cox, Western Kentucky University; Kim DeLaney,
Samford University; and Lisa Farrow, Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary.
Items
tabled for further discussion included hiring a new webmaster, website
development, possible site for the 2005 workshop and the need for further
scholarship funding.
The
next officers meeting is scheduled for April 24 in San Diego. If you have an
item of business that you would like the officers to discuss, contact BCA
president Tim Yarbrough at tyarbrough@namb.net.

TIJUANA
CALLING: RUN FOR THE BORDER!
The
San Diego Baptist Association has invited BCA members attending this year’s
workshop to arrive a day early and travel to Tijuana, Mexico! Our first-ever
BCA mission trip will just require a drivers license for the border crossings.
The
group will leave from our hotel at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23,
and return to the hotel around 9 p.m. The missions experience will be to bag
and distribute beans as a source of protein to needy families. There also will
be an opportunity to work with children in a ministry center/church setting
around 6:30 p.m. This could include a worship service in which we
participate—testimonies, chalk talk, etc. Our BCA Workshop missions offering
this year will help to support child-related projects in the Tijuana churches.
An
option during the trip will be to eat south of the border before re-entering
the USA. Being bilingual will help but isn’t necessary. The churches will
seek to help us with interpretation.
Let
me know right away if you want to participate! We’re looking for a dozen
amigos to run for the border!

PRAYING
FOR TIJUANA TRIP
If
you will be unable to participate in the Tijuana mission trip with your BCA
colleagues but would like to join the Prayer Team, please let Mark Snowden
know. We need to baptize this missions venture and need your help. We’d love
to match you up with one volunteer who will be making the trip. Let us hear
from you! If you want to pray for this effort, tell Mark Snowden,
msnowden@imb.org, and you’ll be added to the prayer list.
