GREETINGS FROM BCA PRESIDENT
BCA: Is it Time for Regional Chapters?
By Tim Yarbrough
In preparation to serve as BCA president, I decided it was time to re-acquaint myself with the bylaws of our organization. After all, how else would I know what I'm supposed to be doing?
In reality, past-president Diane Reasoner and ever-present BCA administrative coordinator Keith Beene did a champion job of getting me ready to "handle the gavel" this year.
What I found in the bylaws re-affirmed why I've maintained BCA membership through the years.
Article 2 pretty much sums it up. BCA is designed "to assist Baptist personnel in communications in professional growth and fulfillment, to share useful ideas and enable members to do effective communications planning and achieve superior results" and "to provide a reinforcing fellowship for members and give recognition for outstanding professional achievement."

We'll, if you've been to a BCA annual workshop, you've seen these tenants played out during numerous seminars, conferences, fellowship opportunities and the ever-popular awards competitions.
But Article 2 goes on to state that BCA works "to establish and maintain the highest ethical and professional standards" and "to increase the understanding and appreciation among Baptists for the work of communications in the service of Baptist causes."
Perhaps it's time to re-emphasize these last two articles … and here's one way we might do it:
Among the items approved by membership at the workshop this past April in Louisville was the piloting of regional BCA chapters. By creating smaller regional and/or city chapters, the idea is that the work of BCA would become more localized, and thus, have much more local visibility and involvement. Back
to top
While a national Baptist organization provides great professional development and fellowship opportunities on an annual basis, regional chapters comprised of local Baptists would theoretically be more effective by meeting more often (say, once a month) and by providing a higher degree of visibility to the work of local Baptist communications practitioners. Additionally, I believe Baptist communicators who would have never been involved in a national organization might consider participating in a local group.
Never before has there been a greater need for emphasizing and maintaining high ethical and professional standards (Enron, WorldCom, etc.) As Christian communicators we're commanded by our Lord to do our work with honor and zeal (Romans 13:7 and 12:11).
A task force is being appointed by past-president Diane Reasoner to study the feasibility of regional chapters. Among their assignments is to investigate piloting the concept. If you have interest in regional BCA chapters, I encourage you to contact Diane at 770-936-5211 or
dreasoner@gabaptist.org.
As I start my duties as BCA president, I want you to know that I welcome any and all input regarding our organization. I know all the BCA officers would echo my sentiments that we're here to serve you. If there are problems, or should I say "opportunities for improvement," we want to know about them. We're here to fulfill the purposes of the above mentioned bylaws of BCA.
