BATTER UP!
'Spring Training 2002’ set for April 4-6 in
Louisville; Register now; reserve hotel rooms while reduced rates last
Spring Training 2002 is the theme of this year’s BCA
Workshop April 4-6 at the Hyatt-Regency in Louisville, Ky.
The “coaching
staff” at the workshop will include communications clinics by Harvey Thomas,
international public relations consultant and former communications director
for British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher; and Larry Ross, Billy Graham’s
personal public relations consultant. Add to that 1-2 punch the writing
expertise of Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Angelo Henderson, special
projects report for the Detroit News, and you have a powerful line-up
that will help you hit home runs with your own work.
Multiple workshops will be offered in
each of BCA’s six affinity groups — news and editorial, graphic design,
management, photography, public relations and electronic media.
Workshop
leaders include Peter Jacobi, retired dean of Indiana University’s School of
Journalism; Patrick Murphey Racey, freelance photographer and former
photographer for Sports Illustrated; Mark Sandlin, travel photographer for
Southern Living magazine; Bill Bangham, director of visual presentations for
the International Mission Board; Paul Huse, director of public relations at
Missouri Baptist College, St. Louis; and Brenda Rick Smith, news and web
specialist, and Troy Fulkerson, Information Services Department director, for
the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Back

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Thank you
for allowing me to serve as your president this past year. It has been an
honor. Words cannot express the gratitude I have for the officers. They have
worked hard this year.
My thanks
to Keith Beene, BCA administrative coordinator, who is always there with the
information to keep us moving forward. A special thanks to the folks in
Kentucky; they are wonderful. The committees have done an outstanding job in
keeping the organization on track.
Baptist
Communicators Association has been a blessing to me. The strength and knowledge
I have received from its members in tough times in my ministry have been
invaluable. Our networking is one of the strongest things about BCA. We are all
working together for the cause of Christ and our support for one another has
been very impressive. Back
to top
Some of the
most powerful experiences I've had as a BCA member have begun simply by sitting
down randomly with a member at a break during the annual meeting. These casual
conversations, which might begin with “What’s happening in your office?” can
readily turn into discussions of deeper matters.
I want to encourage you to
build relationships through BCA. When you come up against an issue and need
support, pull up the BCA website to find someone in the directory that works in
the same area you do and e-mail or call them. We all need encouragement, and we
sometimes need to ask the question, “How did you go about doing...?”
My hope for
the future of this organization is that it will become even stronger in its
membership and networking.
If you have
not registered for the annual meeting in Louisville, “Spring Training 2002,”
get online at www.baptistcommunicators.org
and do so.
Excellent conferences will be provided to
help you hone your skills, and the speakers are outstanding. We all need time
away from our desks to “get in shape for sharing our message” and renew our
professional and creative energy — here’s your chance! Back

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Nominations are now being
accepted for the 2002-2003 slate of officers to be elected at the next annual
meeting April 4-6 in Louisville. If you know a member who would be a good
officer for BCA, please forward his or her name to Dick Bodenhamer at
205-991-4086 or rbodenhamber@wmu.org.
Those offices with an
asterisk below are the ones the nominating committee will be filling. The
program-elect needs to be someone in the St. Louis area since that is where BCA
will meet in 2004. The 2004 meeting will be our 50th anniversary celebration.
