LONGTIME BCA MEMBER AL SHACKLEFORD DIES IN CAR ACCIDENT
Longtime Southern Baptist journalist Al Shackleford, 68, died
from injuries he sustained in a car accident July 23 in
Tennessee. He had been editor-in-chief of Mature Living
magazine at LifeWay Christian Resources since 1992.
The head-on collision involved three vehicles. In the car
with him were his wife, Tommye, daughter Dee Cochran and
two grandchildren. They were treated and released.
Passengers in the other vehicles were injured, but none
fatally.
Shackleford was vice president for public relations of the
SBC Executive Committee from 1987-90. He was dismissed
from his position along with Baptist Press editor Dan
Martin. He previously had been editor of the Tennessee
Baptist & Reflector 1976-87 and editor of The Indiana Baptist 1965-76.
BCA offers two scholarships bearing Shackleford and Martin's
names. The scholarships are offered to students for their
education as well as professionals to attend annual

Adam's Mark Hotel in Columbia, S.C. Members and guests
may extend their stay through March 31 to spend a day

will combine professional development and inspiration
with humor and fellowship.Humorist Dennis Swanberg will be the speaker on
Wednesday evening.

Baptist Church, Columbia, where the South Carolina
Baptist Convention was born in 1821. Rod McClendon, a

are being recruited to lead the study tracks. scottvaughan@scbaptist.org
NEW MISSIONS VP TAKES OFFICE
This is the first year for the position of missions vice
president. Past BCA president Mark Wingfield of the Texas
Baptist Standard said the new officer position was
created to assist BCA members in finding mission opportunities
related to their skills as communicators. "It seemed like a
natural thing we ought to be doing," he said. "There are a number of opportunities out there where skills of communicators can be
employed on a short term basis that could help
missionaries or churches to spread the message better
through printed material, video or any other medium our
members work in."
Tanya Dawson, communications specialist for Woman's
Missionary Union, was elected to the position by BCA
members during the annual meeting in Chicago. She and a
committee will establish contact with mission agencies to
learn about opportunities for members. Interested members can
contact Dawson for more information at 205-991-4013.

WORD GAMES? WHAT'S YOUR TROUBLE SPOT?
In the last newsletter, we asked you to respond to the
question: When do you use missions and when do you use
mission? (Some say missions trips and some say mission
trips) Here's what you had to say:
Tony Cartledge, Biblical Recorder, North Carolina: I use
whichever one makes the green squiggly spell-checker line
go away -- which usually means switching from
"missions," which I use by Baptist habit, to "mission,"
which is more grammatically correct, unless you have more than
one mission in mind.
Mark Snowden, International Mission Board: I try to encourage
missionaries to use "missions" when referring to all the efforts of
all the missionaries in general, as in we study missions.
However, "mission" is a deliberate act. For
instance, an individual goes "on mission" in response
to God's leading. It is a mission trip for a church and never a missions
trip. WMU promotes the mission work of missionaries who are engaged
in missions.
Larry Thompson, Bellevue Baptist Church, Cordova, Tenn.: Our
style is to always use the word "missions" as
both a noun and an adjective, whenever the context is a
Great Commission endeavor. Thus, we say "missions trip" or
"missions and evangelism." We use the word "mission"
whenever the context is the purpose or vision of an
organization or effort. Thus, we say "mission
statement" or "the mission of the missions trip is to share the
Gospel."
Brenda Sanders, Central Baptist Seminary, Kansas City, Kan.:
We have a professor here for whom this topic is kind of a
crusade. He gave me a lengthy explanation one time about
this topic because I was doing a brochure for our annual
"Missions Day" and he kept telling me that it should
be "Mission Day." We wound up officially changing the title of the event to Mission Day because of his convictions.
Robert Johnson, associate professor of
church history and missiology at the seminary says,
"In general, the practice has emerged to think of mission as the 'mission
of the church.' Missions are specific acts of 'mission.' So, the
general word we use is mission. The church engages in mission. However,
we employ a variety of 'missions' in carrying out the 'mission.'"
