California Baptist University is seeking a Public Relations Specialist to support, coordinate, develop and implement internal and external communication strategies that maximize California Baptist Universitys influence and reputation. This position requires a communicator with strong written and verbal skills; a solid foundation in grammar, punctuation and spelling, as well as knowledge of AP style. The position will have the ability to organize and prioritize projects in a deadline-oriented environment, while developing and maintaining relationships among internal clients and external stakeholders. The position also will support the Marketing and Communication Divisions initiatives that are designed to increase student enrollment and public awareness.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develops and writes news release, feature stories, public service announcements, and event bulletins to publicize the university, its programs, activities, faculty, students and staff in a variety of online and print publications including the Roundtable Magazine and CBU Family employee newsletter.
  • Edits and proofreads print and web copy using AP and in-house editorial style guidelines.
  • Writes original copy, and coordinates submissions and photos for the CBU Family electronic newsletter.
  • Provides fresh content for the Marketing and Communications section of the CBU website.
  • Coordinate and prepares copy for Hometown News submissions.
  • Maintains media lists and editorial calendars.
  • Distributes news releases (email, fax, online submission, syndication services) and maintains distribution log.
  • Photographs university events and other assignments, edits photos using Adobe Photoshop and other software, develops and maintains a photography calendar for the year, assists in developing photography assignments with student photographers and assists with archiving photos.
  • Researches a variety of subjects for speeches, presentations and special projects.
  • Assists with university special events.
  • Duties may require evening and weekend work.

    Western Recorder

    The Western Recorder is looking for an associate editor who is a capable news reporter and writer, creative page designer, and skilled photographer. Specifically, the experienced journalist must:

  • Manage weekly production of the newspaper, including page design and layout;
  • Have a solid understanding of news design principles and competence with Adobe InDesign;
  • Generate well-written news and feature stories, as assigned;
  • Demonstrate ability to take quality photos and edit using Adobe Photoshop;
  • Supervise the work of freelance writers and photographers, as needed;
  • Select and edit news articles and feature stories, in consultation with the editor;
  • Embrace digital media platforms and post content to website and Facebook page;
  • Be familiar with Associated Press style and maintain consistent style throughout publication;
  • Coordinate the placement and representation of print advertising;
  • Supervise the production of special sections, inserts and partnership newspapers;
  • Keep abreast of relevant state and national Baptist news;
  • Have a reputation for accuracy and fairness in reporting and working well with others under deadline pressure.

    Requirements: College degree with minimum of two-years experience in writing and editing for print and digital publications, expertise in shooting photos (videos a plus), flexibility to travel statewide on assignments, understanding of Southern Baptist churches and the Kentucky Baptist Convention.
